Ask three people what a website costs and you’ll probably hear three answers somewhere between “free” and “ten thousand dollars.” All of them can be right. The price depends on who builds it, how many pages it has, what it needs to do and who keeps it running after launch. Here’s how it breaks down for a small business in North Jersey in 2026.
The short answer
For most local businesses, a professional website costs somewhere between $250 and $5,000 to build, plus roughly $100 to $400 a year for the domain name and hosting. Where you land depends mostly on the type of site:
| Type of site | Typical price to build | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page (one page) | $250 to $1,000 | New businesses, one main service, ads, flyers and QR codes |
| Business website (5 to 10 pages) | $1,500 to $5,000 | Businesses with several services or several towns |
| Online store | $2,500 to $10,000+ | Selling products with a cart and checkout |
| Large agency project | $5,000 to $25,000+ | Bigger companies with ongoing marketing budgets |
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Two sites with the same number of pages can cost very different amounts depending on the design, the writing and the features behind them.
Option 1: Build it yourself
Website builders like Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy let you make a site yourself for a monthly fee, usually somewhere around $15 to $50 a month for small business plans, and more for online stores (check their current pricing, it changes often).
The real cost is your time. You become the designer, the writer, the photographer and the SEO person. Templates are quick to start but easy to recognize, and many DIY sites end up half finished, slow on phones or invisible on Google because nobody filled in the titles and descriptions.
Good fit if your budget is very tight, you enjoy tech and you have a few free weekends.
Option 2: Hire an independent web designer
Independent designers and freelancers usually charge from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. You talk directly to the person building your site, decisions are faster and there’s less overhead in the price.
Quality varies a lot, so look at real work, read reviews and ask what happens after launch. Make sure the domain is registered in your name and that you can reach the person when something breaks.
Option 3: Hire a marketing agency
Agencies typically start around $5,000 for a custom site and often add monthly retainers for SEO, ads and social media. You get a bigger team and a full marketing plan, but you’ll usually work through an account manager rather than the person actually building your site, and most agencies don’t publish their prices.
Good fit if you have an ongoing marketing budget and need ads, content and design handled together.
What pushes the price up or down
- Number of pages. Every service page, town page or blog post is real work: writing, layout and SEO.
- Who writes the content. If you supply the text and photos, the price drops. If the designer helps write it, the price goes up, but the site usually sells better.
- Custom design or template. A design made for your brand takes longer than dropping your logo into a theme.
- Features. Online booking, an online store, payments, file uploads or member areas all add time.
- Languages. A site in English and Spanish means more content, but it can reach many more of your neighbors. More on that in our guide to bilingual websites.
- Deadlines. Rush jobs cost more almost everywhere.
The costs people forget
- Domain name: about $10 to $25 a year for a .com, and renewal prices are often higher than the first year.
- Hosting: from a few dollars to around $30 a month for a typical small business site.
- Business email like you@yourbusiness.com, usually billed per person, per month.
- Apps and fees: booking apps, store platforms and payment processors (which usually take a percentage of each sale).
- Upkeep: backups, updates and small changes. Either your time or a monthly plan.
If a quote doesn’t say how many pages you get, what’s included, when it launches and who owns the domain, ask before you pay a deposit.
What it costs with Cipher Web Design
We publish our starting prices because you should know before you call. Landing pages start at $249: one page with a custom design, built for phones first, with call, text and WhatsApp buttons and SEO basics. Business websites and online stores get a written quote after a short conversation, so you only pay for the pages and features you need.
Domain and hosting are paid directly to the provider unless your quote includes them, and everything stays in your name. If you’d rather not deal with updates, our website care plan covers backups, analytics reports and small changes every month.
How to choose without overpaying
- Start from the goal. More calls? Online bookings? Selling products? The goal decides the type of site.
- Get it in writing. A real quote lists pages, features, launch date and what happens after launch.
- Own your domain. It should be registered in your name, not the designer’s.
- Look at real work and real reviews, ideally from businesses like yours.
- Start small if you need to. A landing page today can become the home page of a full website later. Not sure which one fits? Read landing page or full website.
Quick answers
Is a $249 website any good?
It can be, if it’s a focused one-page site built for your business, with a clear message, real photos and an easy way to contact you. It won’t be a ten-page site with a store, and that’s fine: most new businesses need a strong first page, not a big one.
Do I have to pay every month for a website?
The design and build are usually a one-time cost. The monthly or yearly costs are the domain, hosting, email and any apps you use. A care plan is optional if you’d like someone else to handle updates.
How long does a website take?
A landing page is the fastest. Business sites and online stores take longer. The biggest factor is usually how quickly the text, photos and feedback come in.
Why don’t most agencies publish prices?
Many projects really are custom, but a starting price helps you plan. We publish ours: landing pages start at $249, and everything else gets a written quote.
